Founders: John & Mary Ellen Montoya
John and Mary Ellen Montoya founded StrataVenture in 2021. The couple married in 1992 in Deming, New Mexico. They have one son, Isaac, and have informally adopted Jason Chia as their second son. They moved from New Mexico to Denton, Texas, in 2009 and fell in love with the North Texas community.
John is a former CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Denton County and has managed the construction of many single-family homes in Denton County. John has also served as CEO of Grace Like Rain and Director of Financial Capability Initiatives with United Way of Denton County. John is a former Federal Law Enforcement Officer with degrees in Criminal Justice and Psychology who transitioned his leadership skills into the construction field with the goal of delivering quality work for a fair price. As StrataVenture’s CEO, John manages the daily operations of the company.
Mary Ellen has a Master’s in Business Administration with a focus in Accounting from Texas Woman’s University and serves as StrataVenture’s CFO.
Both John and Mary Ellen have been volunteers or staff with numerous nonprofits in Denton County. They are both committed to improving access to affordable housing in Denton County which is why they decided to contribute 10% of StrataVenture’s net profit to housing nonprofits in Denton County.
